Tubacex Foundation strengthens its commitment to children and access to essential services in Guyana and Suriname

Tubacex Foundation continues to support, together with UNICEF Spain, a programme that is improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene while expanding early learning opportunities for children in vulnerable communities in Guyana and Suriname.

As part of its commitment to social development in the communities where Tubacex operates, Tubacex Foundation supports initiatives designed to create tangible and lasting impact. Within this framework, its collaboration with UNICEF Spain is helping drive progress in two areas that are essential to children’s development: access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services and improved early childhood education.

The project reflects the Foundation’s long-term approach: improving living conditions, promoting equal opportunities and strengthening the resilience of communities particularly affected by limited access to essential infrastructure and services.

Safe water and more resilient systems in Guyana

In Guyana, the programme is helping schools improve access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services. During the latest implementation period, work was completed at four schools, including three schools in Hururu, a remote riverine community in Region 10, as well as Number 47 Village Primary School.

In Hururu, the work included the rehabilitation of a previously non-functioning well, the installation of a solar-powered water pump, improvements to the water distribution network and repairs to water and sanitation facilities at the schools.

These improvements are benefiting approximately 280 students, as well as other community facilities including the health centre, training centre, school kitchen and teachers’ accommodation.

The use of solar energy is particularly relevant in these remote communities, providing a more sustainable and climate-resilient solution to help ensure reliable access to water.

The project is also progressing towards future interventions at additional schools in Guyana, including Bumbury Nursery School in Region 1 and Paramakatoi Primary School in Region 8, where assessments have identified significant water and sanitation needs.

More learning opportunities for children in Suriname

In Suriname, the initiative supported by Tubacex Foundation combines improvements to WASH facilities with stronger early childhood education through the “Play, Discover and Learn” programme.

During the latest phase, 12 daycare professionals from five centres in interior Maroon communities received training to strengthen the quality of early stimulation and learning activities.

As a result, 115 three-year-old children are gaining improved access to learning opportunities. Together with the beneficiaries of the first cohort of trained educators, the programme has now reached approximately 265 children.

In addition, two daycare centres in Brokopondo have received support to upgrade their facilities, including improvements to water, sanitation and hygiene conditions and new resources for play-based learning. A total of 15 learning material boxes have been distributed to help create more stimulating environments for children’s development.

A commitment that continues

The next phase of the programme, running from August 2026 to June 2027, will extend WASH improvements to additional schools in Guyana and strengthen hygiene education and awareness activities.

In Suriname, the project will expand training for daycare professionals and improve learning environments and WASH services in Kabalebo, including indigenous communities in the country’s western interior.

For Tubacex Foundation, this project reflects a very practical way of understanding its social commitment: supporting solutions that improve living conditions, strengthen local capabilities and create real opportunities for future generations.

The collaboration with UNICEF enables the Foundation to translate this commitment into initiatives with a direct impact on children’s health, well-being and education, while helping build more resilient communities.
